Independent singer-songwriter, producer and storyteller Sharon Katta has unveiled his latest single, ’Authority’, today April 10th, 2026 and it’s a bold spoken-word protest piece that interrogates the nature of power, civic dignity, and the fragile relationship between citizens and the systems meant to serve them. The single perfectly encapsulates the exploration of emotional and philosophical questions around identity, power, belonging and the inner conflicts that shape the human experience. ‘Authority’ began as a two-minute protest poem written in 2021, while Sharon lived in Hyderabad, India. Born from frustration and helplessness in the face of systems denying basic human dignity, the piece examines how power can distort empathy and how respect, something so fundamental, can become revolutionary when persistently denied. Four years later, living in London, Sharon revisited the piece, expanding it into a full musical work that reflects ongoing global conversations around power and civic responsibility. Sonically, ‘Authority’ is dynamic and multi-faceted. The track opens with a modern pop sensibility before seamlessly shifting into rap and spoken-word sections, evoking the narrative and emotional intensity of artists like Kendrick Lamar and Jon Billion. One of its standout features is the layered repetition of the word “respect,” recorded from different parts of the room to create a crowd-like effect that heightens the track’s urgency and depth.
“Power only exists because people allow it to,” Sharon explains – a sentiment that reverberates throughout the track.
