With a determined mind and devoted heart, spirited singer Maria Domark has shared that she will be unveiling her debut EP Flawless on the 3rd of September via P.O.F CORP. She gave us the first taste of what to expect with the punchy future pop song ‘Mieway’ which speaks on years of struggle in the fickle entertainment industry. The singer has openly voiced that she wants to break from previous associations she has had before with regards to her public image, and this debut will certainly do that. Maria Domark is a future pop vixen with immense potential. Industrial sounds mesh into the pop landscape with ‘Mieway’, and the singer’s undeniable confidence in her vocal delivery is electrifying.
We chatted with the talented Maria Domark, and asked her about her biggest inspirations.
Tell us about your highlights for the year
My highlight was definitely the week of finishing up the EP, we worked on this project and at times it felt like it was never going to be over. Once we had the artwork and art it felt like my dream coming to life and I could finally see the project as it is.
My other highlights were writing another song I was struggling with for a long time (not in this EP). I find it hard to express myself sometimes, so every song I finish is a small victory for me.
If you could paint a picture of your sound, what would it look like?
It will have shades of violet, deep blue and black. It will have layers that make you feel like you’re in a three-dimensional world but you’re really not like you are floating in a finite space full of galaxies with a chance of diving in the deep ocean of that darkness. ‘Rumors’ is an exception – it’s more like watching a play in a dark theatre. The play is about a small town, so the picture would be of a girl standing in the middle of it, surrounded by shadows.
What are the 5 albums and artists that have influenced you the most?
As a teen and to this day one of my favourite albums is A Thousand Suns by Linkin park, it’s their most experimental- electronic one. I feel like it’s completely underrated and I was the only one enjoying it! it’s a real masterpiece.
Another one is The Resistance by Muse. For the same reasons, I just love the depth of it and I usually enjoy their sound in general, they’re a huge influence for me.
Miss Anthropocene by Grimes – an album I can listen to forever and really opened me up to what I can do myself with a computer using no live instruments and creating a whole universe of sound with my imagination. She made me believe that I can produce and create my own music, and thanks to her I figured out what kind of music I wanted to make.
There is a lot of other artists who inspired me, mostly punk-pop artists like Avril Lavigne, Sum41, Simple Plan, My Chemical Romance and more.
What has creating a personal EP like Flawless made you realize about yourself?
It made me realize that when you listen to yourself and do what feels right, the results are very satisfying to the spirit. And this was the first time I truly committed to art. This was also my first time writing songs on my own, and I got to know how much my songs tell me the way I feel when I don’t even know it yet. I feel like a different person now than I did two years ago. I think I’ve grown a lot mentally, and feel comfortable in my own skin for the first time ever.
What other artists do you really like at the moment and why?
Lately, I’ve been listening to Chvrches, I love their sound and aesthetics so much and Lauren Mayberry’s vocals are incredible.
Caroline Polachek – The best vocalist ever and every song she makes is a masterpiece.
Six Impala – Some talented dudes. The music just keeps surprising you with how good it is.
Dylan Brady – Everything he makes is fire, this dude is a genius and I seriously hope to get a chance to work with him in the future.
Royal & the Serpent – Just super talented and her music is so fun and real.
Tell us one interesting fact about yourself that no-one would expect.
I sneeze when I eat too fast, and every time I sneeze there has to be a least three of them. one solo sneeze is a surprising occasion to everyone who hangs out around me.
What do you consider your biggest achievement so far?
It’s hard to tell… After my musical dream was denied as a teen I decided to be a model and an influencer so I could have power and be my own boss. I achieved these things only to find out that what I really wanted all along was to make music. until this day I regret letting unsupportive people kill my confidence. I’m happy and proud of myself for chasing these goals, but it’s hard for me to think about these things as achievements because I didn’t get them from doing what I love. My biggest achievement is leaving that world behind me and following my heart, and I’m happy I’m finally able to share some of my work.
