“Never Truly Alone” is a striking dark pop tune from Halover and her long term producer and collaborator Jiroe. The song is about struggling to be alone with yourself and struggling to accept your thoughts and shortcomings when there is no one around to talk to. The singer talks about feeling “lonely”, how we all desperately try to find someone else to “fill the void” in us and how we all turn to various distractions such as TV, gaming, alcohol, online shopping, social media, etc. to avoid dealing with our issues.
“I wrote “Never Truly Alone” during lockdown when I had no choice but to be by myself at home. I didn’t want to deal with what was going on in my head at that time and it was making me feel miserable. Instead of working through it I turned to every possible distraction to quiet it down.” and the singer continued, – “There is a famous saying“We’re born alone, we live alone, we die alone” which I paraphrased and changed to “Never TrulyAlone” meaning that we always have ourselves to turn to in difficult times and it’s more than enough”.
The song starts off very minimalistic with a simple percussion followed by Halover’s soft vocals. Gradually, with every section of the song, more and more unique sounds are being added creating an explosive last chorus with multiple harmonies and layers on top.
