24 May marks the day Canadian artist and producer NICOLAAS released his track ‘Real Escape’ via Haven Sounds and it is every bit as funky as we’ve come to expect from NICOLAAS.

The music he’s making these days is a long step away from his rap days of Muneshine. Now He’s traversing the musical landscapes of the ’80s, synth-wave, and funk has brought to the foreground a sound comparable to Breakbot, Gunship, and Kavinsky. Influenced by disco, boogie, and funk, his sound has been directly influenced by the likes of Nile Rodgers, Blondie, and producer Shep Pettibone (David Bowie, Madonna, Whitney Houston) while also channelling more contemporary artists like Daft Punk, Toro Y Moi and Parcels.

When speaking about his latest single, ‘Real Escape’, NICOLAAS explained “This song really marked a turning point for me in establishing NICOLAAS, before I had even put a name on the project. I had worked on a few ideas with other writers and producers prior to Real Escape, but this was my first real ‘solo’ NICOLAAS track. The vocals were written and recorded to a different demo I had started writing, but when they came back I had a whole new vision for it. I wanted to explore a blend of styles on this one – funk, house and hip hop particularly, and this collaboration made that possible. It all came together naturally, and I’m very pleased with the result! I hope you dig it!.”
