Music inspired by philosophical essays can vary wildly from cringe-worthy to awe-inspiring. Luckily, snny’s latest release, ‘Postmodern Black’ via Radio Silence falls into the awe-inspiring category with its effervescent atmosphere and carefree style. According to the musician, the title of the single is inspired by Bell Hooks’ Postmodern Blackness’ essay which explores “postmodernism, what constitutes as ones identity, and the perception of people, particularly African Americans, who espouse the postmodern philosophy”.

Speaking of the single, snny had the following to say: “‘Postmodern Black’ is, to me, a sonic manifestation of my own self-reliance. It’s almost a superpower to be able to trust your instincts, and I wanted to render that notion with melody and instruments.  As a young African man creating in this era I have a responsibility to my kinfolk to champion independence and fortitude during these divisive times.  The title of the song is inspired by an essay written by Bell Hooks in 1990 called Postmodern Blackness.”

snny has also been public in his support of the #blacklivesmatter movement, stating on Facebook: “I was taught to take my rage and use it as fuel to channel positivity, ingenuity, even creativity. Today my rage is rage, my anger is anger, just like some peoples hatred is simply rooted in the fact that our skin is black and that’s that”.
