American singer-songwriter Jhene Aiko has released both the short film and album within a day of each other off her MAP series. MAP stands for: Movie (TRIP), Album (TRIP 17), and Poetry book (2fish).
The movie is a semi-autobiographical exploration of “love, loss, and self-discovery.” Released 21 September it features Aiko as ‘Penny’ – a poet who goes on a journey with a stranger after the death of her brother. Unreleased music and poetry from Aiko is also featured in the film.
On the same day as the film’s release, she shared a voice clip on her soundcloud titled “MAP Mission” in which she gives insight to the struggles she has had since her brother’s passing in 2012.
The very next day, she surprisingly released her album 22-track Trip 17 featuring Big Sean, Swae Lee and Brandy amongst others. Her poetry book is yet to be released.
She says of the album in her press release: “I hope to inspire others to share their grief and pain, because I believe suffering can be alleviated when we understand we are not going through any of it alone.”
